Spring has arrived in Southern California, bringing longer days, steady returning winds, and renewed energy on the water. It’s one of the most beautiful times of year to sail, and our calendar is quickly filling with opportunities to connect, learn, and enjoy time together as a community.
What truly makes WSA-OC special is the spirit of support among our members. Whether you’re stepping aboard to learn a new skill, joining a race crew, participating in a cruise, or simply sharing stories at the dock, that sense of camaraderie is at the heart of everything we do. Our programs and on-the-water events thrive because of the many volunteers who generously give their time and expertise. That enthusiasm is what keeps this organization vibrant, welcoming, and strong.
As we move into the heart of the sailing season, I encourage each of you to take full advantage of the activities ahead. If you’re newer to sailing, this is a perfect time to build confidence and experience. For our more seasoned sailors and skippers, your leadership and willingness to mentor others make all the difference. There is truly a place for everyone on the water with WSA-OC.
For those selected as First Mates, your role is important. You serve as the skipper’s right hand, assisting with sail trim, docking, navigation, and coordinating the crew. Just as importantly, you help maintain awareness of safety and changing conditions, ensuring that everyone onboard enjoys a smooth and successful day.
As the season gets underway, a quick reminder that safety and good seamanship always come first. Please be mindful of alcohol consumption while boating and do your part to help ensure that every outing ends with a safe return to the dock.
You may also notice that boat assignments occasionally shift to accommodate skipper preferences and maintain balanced crews. Thank you in advance for your flexibility and positive attitude; it’s all part of creating the best possible experience for everyone involved.
Thank you for being such an important part of this wonderful community. I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events and, of course, out on the water.
Our March St. Paddy’s Day OTW event was a great success, with a turnout of 5 boats and 35 members and boat owners who took to the sea from Dana Point, CA. Clare Kenney hosted the Afterparty at the Dana West Yacht Club.
