August is here and our annual Catalina trip has come and gone but that doesn't mean your opportunity to get out on the water has passed! Vice Commodore Debra is working hard on the next few events (including a pop-up!) but it is up to you to register (*where required) and show up!
Not all things WSA are actually ON the water... a dozen members informally gathered in Waikiki in July to watch the TransPac yachts arrive in Honolulu. The local yacht clubs all held celebrations over the course of a week; some members rode out on the harbor escort boats to guide the finishers to their slip; many partied aboard the boats (I have no idea how these sailors had any energy to entertain us after their journey but entertain us they did!); and of course there was time for shopping (of both yacht-y and souvenir genres), eating and swimming/sunning!
No invitations were needed to join, and we all had a wonderful time. I ask you: What interests you, and who have you met at a General Membership Meeting or on a day sail who you might ask to join you on an adventure? Camaraderie and a shared passion for the ocean has brought us all together, but it's up to you to take the next step, which I assure you will enrich your life. ❣️
I wish you fair winds and following seas.
Get Involved: August and September On-the-Water Opportunities:
This month offers WSA-OC members multiple different opportunities to hang out with fellow members on or near the water!
Our first event of the month is a nation-wide event WSA-OC celebrates with the National Women’s Sailing Association known as AdventureSail®. WSA-OC is organizing this philanthropy event on August 5th in Dana Point in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente. I know many of you will be volunteering to help, as it truly takes a village to make these events happen!
The following weekend, BYC is hosting a Sabot Clinic, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at BYC. While this is not a “WSA-OC sanctioned event,” several WSA-OC members will be participating. The cost is $50 and I posted their flyer in our Members-Only Facebook Group. The clinic will consist of classroom and on-the-water training. No experience is necessary, and they will provide the sabots.
The following day on Sunday, August 13th, WSA-OC will be hosting a “pop-up” raft-up event with possibly one or two boats, but mainly we will be having fun on blow up flotation devices, kayaks, paddle boards, etc. Stay tuned for the location, as it will (as usual) depend upon where participating boat(s) are located.
Looking forward into Fall events, our next OTW Members-Only Day Sail will take place Sunday, September 10th. September’s OTW event will most likely be in Alamitos Bay or Newport Harbor (but again, will depend upon boat participation and their location).
We also have a second event in September! Our annual philanthropy event, Women in the Wind, will take place September 23rd in partnership with a nonprofit organization, Soroptimist. There may still be opportunities to volunteer. If interested, please reach out to Director of Philanthropy, Colleen Weeks, at philanthropy@wsaoc.org.

DON’T ROCK The BOAT!Take a Personality Test at This Month’s General Membership Meeting: “Wired That Way” A Comprehensive Guide to Help You Understand Your Personality Traits and Bring Balance into Your Life.
I am happy to introduce as our guest speaker, WSA-OC Director of Philanthropy, Colleen Weeks. Colleen’s experience as a Certified Personality Trainer has been beneficial in her life and leadership positions, and she will share her knowledge to help us work and play better with others, both on and off the water. This fun and informative presentation will help you understand how you are wired, and how best to maximize your strengths while minimizing your weaknesses.
Colleen has passionately worked in women’s healthcare for over 40 years. She is a Certified Childbirth, Lactation, Perinatal Bereavement and Sex Education Specialist, a fellow of Lamaze International, and a former board member of the Orange County and International Childbirth Education Association. Colleen recently retired as the Perinatal Education Manager at Kaiser Permanente Orange County’s Anaheim and Irvine Medical Centers, where she also served as Director of the Perinatal Bereavement Program and the co-lead on the Family Violence Prevention Team.
This presentation will take place at WSA-OC’s General Membership Meeting on August 9th at Aventura Sailing in Dana Point at 7pm. Happy Half Hour will start at 6:30pm. Red and white wine will be available for cash purchase.
AdventureSail® in Dana Point is only days away. On Saturday August 5th WSA-OC will offer this day of sailing to girls from the Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente as part of a nation-wide event WSA-OC celebrates with National Women’s Sailing Association. Read more about AdventureSail® here. We have an amazing list of volunteers who have signed up to help on the day of the event, and others have generously donated items for gifts bags for the girls participating from the Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente. I look forward to reporting on the outcome of the event at our August General Membership Meeting and in our next newsletter.
It’s also almost time for our second annual philanthropy event—Women in the Wind in partnership with Soroptimist will take place on Saturday September 23rd in Newport Beach. I am still looking for volunteers to make this the most successful event yet. If you would like to offer your boat, provide items for gift bags, or volunteer on the day of the event, please contact me at philanthropy@WSAOC.org. These events can be life-changing for the girls and women we serve and would not be possible without your help!
